Time to begin discussions on the next character for our bi-annual [glow=red,2,300]CBF WORLDWIDE CUSTOM PROJECT.[/glow] The Winter edition was fabulous! we got some excellent Cat woman customs submitted and she was a fun character to make. I look forward to seeing our entries posted at Custom Con where other like-minded people can enjoy them too. My first pic is: [glow=red,2,300]MAN-BAT[/glow] He is a character which has always captivated me and I would love to see what our members can conjure up with such a dynamic creature as our featured subject. Lets here some suggestions for the Summer character vote. Remember! Any character from the Batman universe will be considered, so if you have a fave or a list of faves, please post here. Hmmmm... I think Man-Bat would be a fun challenge for a lot of folks. I could vote for that.
Just to clarify, hadn't we decided that the "Winter" edition would be a single character, while the "Summer" edition would be a theme? Or did we nix that already?

I'm all fo that! Theme, character, whatever. BUT....I think we should maybe stick to the format. Maybe Manbat can be under a type of theme?

Well, Bats has had more than his share of animal-based enemies.
Ohhhh!!! I know! I know! "Weird Science." Ya know, like mad scientist and chemical potions gone awry. That would qualify lots of interesting Bat villains. Man-Bat would be a perfect example. Or Hugo Strange. Or Bane. Or Splicers. Or anybody who ever drank a poition. Or loads of wacky villains from the fifties.

Thanks for starting this discussion Will. I like the idea of either "Batman's Bestiary" where we could focus on characters who are transformed into animals or ARE animals (rather than dressing like them) or "Weird Science" with the science gone awry angle. Both could incorporate ManBat and both would be fun choices for me to contemplate from my angle.

I personally much prefer "themed" approach rather than the singular character selection. Gives us the chance to go nuts and see the great variety of talents, imaginations and skills.

Well, I'm hoping to see this discussion develop a bit and I wonder if we have properly communicated what this is all about to many of our newer members who I'd also love to see involved.
Anyone have questions?
Here is an idea from our still AWOL Faithful Butler that he wanted to toss out (he's still having computer problems):
Batman 3039- Here's a chance to actually do a BATMAN figure for the challenge and flex some creativity and originality. The idea is what Batman would look like in the distant future- beyond Batman Beyond- your own conception of the Dark Knight in a distant time when Earth may be in any manner of condition from high tech super science to a post-nuclear wasteland or whatever you can imagine...
Also
In previous discussions the idea of HENCHMEN has surfaced as a theme to be explored and I thought I'd toss that out...
Also
For a more "fill out your collection" approach we might consider "The Batman Family". This would include Batgirl, Gordon, Alfred, Nightwing, Bullock, Batwoman, Bat-Mite, Montoya, Chief O'Hara, Ace, Vickie Vale, etc... anyone in the Batman cannon that is part of Batman's support group. This idea would create an open door to fill in characters you've maybe always wanted to do but never had an excuse to make or try one you hadn't thought of before.

These all sound like excellent concepts. The Beasts of Batman, The Future Batman & Batman's Family & friends.
I would go for either of these ideas.

Hmmm... Well, as you all know, I like to keep these things as open-ended as possible, so as to appeal to the widest array of participants as possible. While I think FB's "FutureBat" idea is pretty nifty, I think it's very limited. I also think, as it's defined now, it's more a character choice, and less a theme choice. However... If one considers the wide range of possibilities under "weird science," that could indeed included wacky future technology that a FutureBat would be sure to use. Thus allowing such an interpretation, while still allowing others to work from the Man-Bats, Dr. Phosphoruses and Banes of Gotham.
(No offense FB!)

Cas- Ya know you make a good point about the future Batman sounding more like a character choice than a theme. To expand on FB's idea a bit- what if "Batman 3039" meant to do a figure in the World of Batman of the future, meaning you are free to do your interpretation of any character set in the distant future. This would allow a lot of freedom of choice yet set a distinct tone in any of the figure's designs and might prove intresting to see showcased together.
I'd also like to explore the "Weird Science" concept more and flesh it out. I agree that the themes chosen should be open-ended but the theme should also be clear in what its boudaries are. For instance, to illustrate a point- The Joker is essentially the result of a chemical accident which would be a weird scientific reaction- would that qualify? Would Poison Ivy qualify too since her powers are decidedly weird botany? I guess what I'm getting at is I'd like to avoid relying on some of the Batman "standards" for a themed challenge if possible. But maybe that's okay...From another point of view- If a character from the future was selected would that qualify as "Weird Science" since in the future that science may not be be weird at all- or is it okay because to US the science of the future is weird?
Does this same thinking have a place for discussion about a "magic" theme that heads in the same but opposite direction?
Just thinking out loud- would like to hear some other voices in this discussion also...

Yes, please, let's hear some other voices.
To address some of Picnic's thoughts... Speaking personally, I think the future Bats idea would work best if we already had an established look or design motif. (And we don't.) For example (and I'm not suggesting this) "Batman Beyond" has a distict style. If we chose to work in that pallet, it might be fun to see what we all come up with within those limitations. Or, as another example, one might say "Okay, let's work within the style of the "Logan's Run" movie. Or "Battlestar Galactica." What might Bats world look like using those elements. Without a unified, defined world, we're esentially just making up "Elseworlds," so long as their set in the future. Frankly, I think that would get boring fast. Unless we all turn into Glorbes overnight.
As you say, though, I definately see a "future Bats" falling under "weird science." In fact, I say just about anything can fall under weird science, so long as the creator can justify it. True, I don't want to see just another Joker. But maybe one can put a spin on his story. What were the chemicals? What was being manufactured at the plant? Using your Ivy example, what might she or Woodrue been working on, plant-wise? I think there's lots of room for explanations. And yes, I'd rather see future tech or Man-Beasts gone wrong, but then not everybody wants to make such things.
I think it's possible to pick a theme that's wide enough for all to want to participate, while still be a cohesive theme. Personally speaking, I have little interest in "future tech," but if we chose "weird science," I can see where we'd easily get some "future tech" entries, as well as man-beasts and wacky scientists. The more the merrier.
Or henchmen. I can always go for henchmen.

I know that I missed out on the last showcase, but I'm really excited by Andy's Batman 3039 idea. I'm assuming we could make any Batman character as we would imagine them in the far-flung future? So, officially put me down for that concept/theme.
That being said, the Wierd Science angle is interesting as a second choice for me.
OOPS! Sorry, I missed the last two posts. Hmmm...Cason is right about the whole problem of having a defined theme for a future setting. I still really like the idea, but I can see how it may not work. I'll have to think about this some more.
