I for one am not very good at it,.. so I start with a base . Something with ears, a nose & some eyes. It should be easy to start there first.

Jason is right! If your just getting started then using an existing head in the scale which you want to sculpt is the way to go.
Personally I try to use a head which has the basic shape of the character which I wish to capture. I would usually shave off stuff like eyebrow es, noses , hair lines and then add my own features using Super Sculpy. Heres a great tip for you.
Grab yourself a Heat gun, about $30 ish. After you get a desired feature such as maybe the nose, Use the heat gun to cure that part so it won't get damaged while you work on other areas of the face. You can use this method right up until your finished then use the heat gun to cure the finished sculpt. You can also Sand the cured Sculpy to smooth out before molding.
