Continuing to bring the 1958 story of Batman From Planet X to “toy life” I have crafted the Planet X Batmobile. There is only one picture of this vehicle in existence so I had to work from it. I postulated the back end of the flying saucer-like vehicle from pictures of other Planet X “cars” seen in the story- notably the one being crushed by a robot which is quite similar to the Batmobile pictured.
This model would be considered 1:43 scale I believe as I used a Corgi Batman replica (supplied once again through the generosity of Martin- don’t know what I’d do without him!). The Batman in the pilot’s seat is painted with the garish Batman From Planet X colors. I was not attempting to create a masterful model replica (which would be beyond my skill level) but rather something which would look like a cheap plastic toy version that might have been produced. The vehicle is made entirely from scratch with many bits and pieces found and fused together. This area of customizing was all totally new to me.
Here then is the Batmobile:
The box was crafted by the endlessly-talented Anthony Durso. I wanted the illustrations to have mostly a “painted” quality as is the case with many of the older Batmobile toys made by Marx and companies of that era. That is why I chose Marx as the manufacturer on the box. I “painted” the version of the Batmobile on the box and altered a Batman trading card for the one you see on the back. I also pieced together the comic illustrations from the original story to make the back picture- note where I have altered that blue car to now BE the Batmobile. Everything else you see is all Anthony’s doing as he pulled it all together with his own artistry and skill- my hat’s off to him once again as the box makes my crude model look reasonably “manufactured” once the car is tucked inside his professional looking box. Thanks Anthony!!
Finally, here is The Batman From Planet X Collection so far. Next project will be the rocket-like Bat-Plane which is going to be a real challenge.
