Here’s two more heads for 12” figures I’m working on, these are the rough sculpts, the Joker and Auqaman.

They're really nice. I love the hair lines on the both of them. The teeth on the Joker look killer as well. The face sculpts are just fantastic. Nice work.

Fantastic detail. Are these based on any source art? (Look sort of Alex Ross to me.) You probably already mentioned this and I simply forgot.

You do great work, the detail is outstanding!I wish i could pull off stuff like that. The Joker's looking great but he still needs something, maybe just a bit of a narrower feel to the face i'm not sure.Still, what do i know?

Enviable talent Steven! Both are superb in detail, and expressive. I notice you are not of the "perfect symmetry" school and are not afraid to arch an eyerbrow- really adds character!

Fantastic stuff. As the image was loading from the upper part of the Joker head I was thinking 'Nicholson??" but as it filled the screen(My computer is slow and as old as the hills) I saw that it was a new take on an established character. Looks brilliant. I love the kind of 'What would these guys look like if they were real people' style of sculpting too. I love the comic book interpretations of course and all the others but the 'real life' style works great for me too. Excellent work and thanks for sharing buddy.

Yeah, echoing Martin, I first thought Nicholson a bit, I even thought through and across the eyes that you caught a look that I saw in the Alec Baldwin Shadow a bit (I wish someone would really do a good sculpt of that face!) then I started to realize you have some of the old "Man who Laughs" Conrad Veidt quality to him. You are going back to the source there Steven. Bravo!
And the mouth on the Aquaman is amazing. You have a real knack for capturing character. You must have some super observation skills as well as some great references.
Very nice work on both. You are fast! Keep it up buddy!

I just realised who that Joker Head was making me think of.Remeber the guy that played the young Jack Napier in the '89 Batman Movie?[Don't know his name]. That's what that head makes me think of a young Joker, that sneering and more youthful face.I'm really keen to see him finished now!

Styler and design are awesome. great work as usal!
Steven, I would love to see any tutorial type tips you have on your techniques for sculpting (ie: ears, lips etc). Unless they're trade secrets so to speak . . . but man you get the detail really well!
great stuff! Todd

Thanks guys!
Yes, they’re both Ross inspired, but the Joker is giving me a hard time because Ross is kind of inconstant with him. I did the first Joker (not pictured) off of the “Tango of Evil” painting, but found that the teeth are so big in that painting it made him look very funny from any other angle that straight on. So I worked on it until he looked a little more natural.
I’ve worked on it some more so it no longer looks like it does in the pictures above. I’ve raised the forehead a bit more, lowered the brow a bit, and the cheeks have been knocked down also. I’ll take some pictures of it tomorrow.
Bodies are in the works, an Aquaman outfit has been patterned out and fabric purchased for it. I already have a Tux pattern that will be adapted for the Joker so it’s just a matter of time.
Ad for a tutorial I not sure I can convey how I do my sculpting. In fact I’m not too sure how I do it myself. I kind of zone out when I’m sculpting, I wouldn’t have the presents of mind to stop and take pictures of each step. I’ll try though.
