Hey earlier this Summer (July 1st) George "King of the Kustomizers" Barris put in a live appearance at the Volo Auto Museum which is only about a 45 minute drive from my house.
Fortunately I got word of this in time to pop over there and finally meet the man behind the 1966 legendary Batmobile. I thought I would share a few pics of the day as it was a thrilling day out for me...
Here is George Barris arriving in a car he designed that drives itself! No driver!! Apparently it's done with a camera/sensor type of deal- really cool! He was escorted by Batman in a police car.
And here I am with Mr. Barris himself!!! Wow- this is the first time I've ever gotten up the gumption to approach a celebrity. As you can see it was a VERY bright and sunny day.
He was such a sweet guy. The first picture didn't take cause I had the camera set wrong and he came back to let me get another even though he was being dragged around by lots of people. He asked someone to wait while he helped out "this young man".... haven't been called that in a long time!!
And I got my Hot Wheels Batmobile signed!!!
It cost $10 to get it signed.
Part of the day's events was the first-day unveiling of the museum's "Car of the Future". Apparently it was commisioned by Universal for a movie that didn't end up getting made called "The Fast lane" and was made as a protoype by GM. George Barris is responsible for the custom interior.
Here is the world's first look at this car...
And here is George Barris inside. Did I position myself great for this picture or what? There was a huge crowd of people around the car and I managed to get front and center!
I talked to "Batman" a little bit inside the museum. His son was meant to play Robin with him but caught some kind of throat flu or something and had to stay home. He was roasting outside in the costume and was more comfortable in the air conditioned museum showroom.
Here's me hanging with "Batman"!
Some shots from the museum (a couple are better than I had before)...
The Batmobile
Robin's Costume
The Shakespeare Bust and Bat-Computer Panel
Here is another Barris classic, the Drag-Ula from The Munsters
And lastly I just thought this was pretty cool....
