Well,it's been available on DVD for a while now and you know i STILL haven't seen it at all[don't hit me ].I guess i was kinda turned off by all the ragging it got from people who's opinions i respect back when it was released at the Theatres. So what i guess i'm asking is,now that some of you have had a chance to go through it in the comfort of your own home how do you feel about it now?Better, worse, indifferent? Just curious.

I got the spectacular 14 disc Superman movie DVD set which includes Suerman Returns. After being inundated with Superman glaore including the richly rewarding Donner-Cut of Superman II I thought I might change my mind about Returns. Bryan Singer assembled a great documentary that is included about the history of Superman. In it, he and his team all seem to fully understand the virtues and status of Superman and his story. So I put it in and found I couldn't bring myself to watch it all the way through. How could Singer SAY all of those things- the right things- and then betray everything he seems to understand when he made this movie? Obviously my opinion hasn't changed. It is what it is and I think I've said enough about that before.

I got the ultimate collectors set as well and have had the chance to watch Returns a few more times. Strangely, I still find myself without a solid opinion After seeing it in the theater my thoughts were mostly positive. There were a few issues that probably shouldve bothered me more, but for whatever reason just didnt? I thought it was essentially pretty good with a few quirks or even flaws but nothing flat out terrible about it (othe rthan the suit lol). Since seeing again on dvd, my thoughts have changed too much. and I still cant seem to form an intelligent critique or really nail down the good and or the bad points I perceived. Lots of folks condemn Returns for being such a virtually carbon copy of the first movie, which it is in many ways. But I see why and that doesn't bother me. I think the makers did right by picking up the torch from Donner the way they did, but I think despite their best intentions, they missed "something" about the true heart of the character. I think there is an aura or sense of deliberately trying to make Superman uber accessible? Almost lacking in humanity (or the same heart/humanity I associate with Supes) perhaps? I still dont think Returns was a bad movie or a bad superman movie but it couldve been greater. Not perfect but I'm still hopeful, optimistic and excited for the next installment.

I too had a bit of a SUPERMAN-FEST this Christmas past. The two new cuts of the original Chrisopher Reeve movie and SUPERMAN II, the Fleischer animated shorts, the colour set of the George Reeves show and the Bryan Singer documentary too along with...SUPERMAN RETURNS. I still enjoyed the movie for what it is. I have a few problems with it and many of the plot devices but by and large I buy into it all the way. Maybe more so than I did with BATMAN BEGINS. The effects were stunning the new Jimmy and Perry White were bang on the money, the cameos were nicely handled and the reference throughout to the Donner years very welcome. Spacey as Luthor was 'workmanlike' for him but good enough in my book. HOWEVER I didn't like the over messing with the uniform, I felt Routh was given too little to do aside from look handsome and whizz around. Lois Lane was not my cup of tea at all and that hairy kid scared the crap out of me just by how he looked. Mayber if a sequel emerges things amy pick up but with the whole son, father, mother triangle I don't know.
