Last April /04 I headed down to New Jersey to the anual Chiller Theatre Convention. I live in the Toronto area of Ontario Canada and Im not too familiar with the States, but off I went.
I left Toronto about 2:30 AM and headed for the border at Kingston Ontario. After crossing the border I continued my journey to NJ and noticed that there was a McDonalds very half hour or so , good thing I love McDee's , so I decided to stop at one and have some lunch and refere to my maps & route which I had highlighted.
Like I said, I am not familiar with the USA roads and when I should have stayed straight to Jersey, I ended up staying on the main hiway which curved westbound and I ended up going about 4 hours in the wrong direction.
I got some info and a better map at a gas station and headed southerly until I hit a main line which would "supposedly " lead me straight to NJ.
I'm driving along this highway and I noticed the car in front of me ( a dark green Alero) had a Batman sticker on the back window, I thought that was cool, and kinda coincidental, as I was going to see Adam West (Bat-man). Anyway, I also seen that he had Bat-man 4 on his licence plate, and he also had batman decals on the sides of his car windows "could this guy be heading to the convention?"
If so, I could simply follow him directly there, but I needed to know for shure so i came up withh a "brilliant plan"
Whilst driving, I took one of my McDonalds napkins and with a marker, I wrote ADAM WEST as big as I could on it. I then tried to get beside this car to show him my message but that was a feat in it's self, as he was continueously driving in the passing lane.
I managed to get beside him, lowered my window, beeped my horn and when he looked over, I held up my napkin, which was blowing arond so much that it could not be read by the guy, He did aknowledge me, but smiled, shrugged his shoulders as to say " sorry crazy person, I dont know what you want"
As coincidental as it may have seemed, I decided not to follow this car and passed him and continued on my own.
I finally arrived in NJ and then I got lost there, I stopped and asked several different people at differents places and although everyone was friendly enough, I was always being misled, "just follow this route, you can'nt miss it" Famouse last words, and everyone in NJ told me that, well I missed it everytime, in fact I kept getting directed to some stupid turn-pike, which when entering I had to pay a toll.
I kept going back & forth on that dumb turn-pike, as per the directional advice I was recieving from both ends of this hiway, and I kept having to pay again and again. I was sooooo frusterated that I exclaimed, " I hate New Jersey!!" this was crazy, and if I wasn't so lost, I would have just said the hec with it, and gone home.
All I knew was that the Hotel which was hosting the Convention was accross the street from Giants Stadium, so thats where I ended up, at Giants Stadium. I could see the top of the Hotel above some trees and was releived (so I thought ) The Hotel seemed to be in the center of some hiways which had Turn-pikes and although I could see the top of the Hotel, It took me over 2 hours to get onto the right road which led to the Hotel, but I finally made it. I found a parking spot, bought a wristband ticket, and joined the 2 block line up for the "Celebrity tent".
There was some real nice folks in the line and conversations went from "where we came from, to whom we wanted to see in the tent".
After about 45 minutes i made it to the entrance of the tent...........................To be continued.
