Okay, I have started over. My focus is clear about what I want. What I want is a set of figures that look like they were made in the 1960’s to promote the movie. They should look like they were cheaply made, simple, and cheesy. Like something they sold at the dime store in the Christmas aisle next to the ornaments and the fruit cake. So I simplified, and I found some cheap vinyl figures at the dollar store to use. I used bright, obnoxious colors that I think they would have used. They are supposed to be green despite the poor make-up in the movie that varies from scene to scene. I know I need to shorten the antennae. I studied the movie and despite the photo I have provided here of ol’ Kimar the Martian Leader- the top visor-thingy IS sparkly green not silver so that’s how I made it. Once again I could use some feedback and suggestions- I have 9 more figures to make so let me know what I'm doing right or wrong before I botch them all! Here is a view of the other characters that will be made. I am still assembling pieces for most of them as I continue to work on Kimar.

You are bang on track now mate. This looks like what you want it too. Real 'cheap and nasty' from a cut price store but like something which did actually come off a factory production line. Mad but cool. Can't wait to see the robot Torg!!!!

TORG RULES! ;D
Good work so far. A tad more green than the guy in the movie is, but if you are going for the toy look, you got it.

To my eyes you have nailed the exact feel you were aiming for.The tones for the faces are excellent and the overall feel of a mass-produced and cheesy toy has been captured beautifully. I dig these, can't wait to see them all standing together.

Well, so far it seems I am on track I think. It is more difficult then you may guess to try and be "bad" at these to the right degree. I spend so much time with the other projects I generally work on just staring at details and reworking my results in order to do my best to approximate all of them (with wide ranges of success and failure any way) that it requires some unlearning on my part to create the right balance of retro-cheese for these. Plus, I want these to look mass produced on a budget and poorly manufactured but not just poor in general.
Les- Regarding the green skin- originally I was using a flesh tone base and then applying washes of green to simulate the actors in the movie and it dawned on me that that was too sophsticated for this project. So I selected a blunt green that I thought would make an appealing Martian skin tone for a toy as you described. So hopefully they are "too green"!
Pete-It is true that Girmar was played by Pia Zadora in her first film role. She generally gets top billing on the DVD releases of this movie despite her incredibly minor role as a child actor in a bit part and it is a bit of trivia that everyone seems to love to exploit about the film. To be honest, aside from "Butterfly" I couldn't tell you what else Pia Zadora ever did and I'm not quite sure why I even know about that film.
Jason- You amuse me with the amount of thought you have given to Voldar's "look"!

If I am right in my memory the 'biggest' thing Pia Ziadora ever did was to have sections of Pickfair demolished and re-designed. Pickfair was the 'palace' of the original King and Queen of Hollywood Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. It has a place in movie history of course but in her 'wisdom' Pia and her husband bought it only to renovate and build it into their own home. Didn't go down too well with movie buffs and historians understandably.

Now that the hectic holidays are behind us I can continue working on these so fear not Les. I finally found a suitable body for the robot Torg during an after-Christmas sale and I received the head I needed for Santa shortly before Christmas. All in good time...
