Bruce- The blue tunic would have worked for me. I understand where you are coming from with the more neutral black and if it works for you then that's what matters. I am excited to see the next step in the Flash Rocket evolution and just the mention of the colors you've described tells me you are on the right track, at least for my money. Vultan, Ming's Guard and Barin all should be spectacular from your hand. I understand why the more pedestrian Dale and Zarkov may not be on your to-do list but doesn't Aura inspire you just a little???

Kevin- Of course Aura inspires me! I may rework my current rocket ship rather make an entirely new one for Flash, since I want to make Ming a ship as well, and I'd better not make too many more (space is an issue, you see). Anyway, here's some more Flash Gordon Madness! Dale ArdenAs a sort of a response to Kevin's comments about the lack of color in Flash's outfit, I decided to give Dale a more traditional Flash color scheme. Rather than making Dale a barely dressed victim, I decided to represent her more as an action character, and give her the color scheme and outfit more common to Flash himself. I made a flight helmet for her, but it didn't really jive with the whole design, so I decided to go pretty plain with the finished figure. I used a FF movie Sue Storm as a base, resculpted the hair, and gave her a leather and fabric tunic with sword. This way, there would be sort of a uniform type look (when I ever get around to Zarkov, I'll probably follow similar lines). She's a bit plain, but I kind of like the way she turned out. And I figured that if Aura was going to be accurate to the source material, then at least Dale should be a little more, ummm, dressed. King VultanTaking more cues from Brian Blessed than Alex Raymond, I still wanted a Vultan that could function both as a formidable foe and then (after some coaxing) a loveable ally. Let's see: Body is from a funky Wolverine, Head is from a Gimli (as are the hands and gauntlets), wings are from a ML Angel, armour is styrene and leather, and the shield is a Captain America shield with a vinyl emblem stuck to the front. I chose to forgo the yellow skin tones, because I suspected that would look putrid on the figure (and would be rather offensive otherwise). Let me know what you think, and thanks for looking.

I just watched the 80's Flash Gordon this weekend and was seriously contimplating making customs, but after seeing this Vulko, there's no need. They've already been made!
This line of customs may be the most natural fit of your sensiblities (1930's steam-punk) with your customizing talents (especially your use of cloth) - it feels so natural and so right. These are amazing customs. You have to keep going! Continue the madness!!

Excellent on the Dale. Just perfect! Like the colors and how they balance out with Flash. Makes him look better with less color. As for Vultan... Umm....
Hmmm....
Let me see....
Can you say...
GENIUS!
You are, you know. And your colors and summary finish are always perfection to me. I know you have your detractors out there (God forbid!), but I for one, find your work always intellectually stimulating, as well as so damn visually perfect. I just love your style I guess. Your dark, almost gothic use of color, and metallics, works for me in lots of ways. I am not alone. I know your work is exemplary.
Keep on with this set now. Let's see Prince Barin and others.... I wanna see you do Ming's daughter myself! ;D (And not as clothed as Dale! Although, that would be interesting too! I'm sure it will be a treat. )

You know, I would LOVE to see what you'd do with Flash Gordon characters...you have a real knack for adapting different styles and takes on characters...seeing a Ming the Merciless translated into a Timm-esque animated style would be extremely cool. Thanks for the kind words, man.

Thanks for the kind words, captain.

Thanks, man!

Far too bold a compliment, but thanks for the kind words.

Well, I've burned through the first three of Checker Publishing's Flash Gordon collections and am about to start the 4th volume, and I can tell you there's a neverending wellspring of characters to make. Barin and Aura for sure, and Zarkov as well...but I'm really looking forward to making Prince Thun, bravest of the Lion Men. I can really see why George Lucas wanted to create so many characters and species for Star Wars...obviously he was spurned on by his love for Alex Raymond's wacky universe. Thanks as always for the kind words, Les.
Thanks again everyone!

Crazy awesome. Not only are you technically skilled as all get out, you have a very singular aesthetic that translates beautifully to this work. Serious, but inventive & playful.
Stellar.
