When you think of action and adventure what name comes to mind? Chef Boyardee of course!! Who better than, to make an action figure of? Seriously, though, one of the categories of toys I collect is advertising characters and I thought it would be neat to apply the Mego customizing method to that branch of characters. So here is my first ad character project-Chef Boyardee! He has an original Mego body and wears a Mego Boss Hogg suit- the hat, apron, neckerchief, etc. were made from scratch. Do you recognize the head I used? Hopefully I have painted and adjusted him well enough that you can’t! The tiny can of Ravioli is a dollhouse miniature. I have some socks arriving soon for him so his ankles won’t stick out but I thought I’d go ahead and post him now since he is just completed! The nifty box was produced as always by Anthony “thetoyroom” Durso and I think it is just terrific!! It includes a history of the real Chef- Hector Boiardi, a run down on Boy-Ar-Dee packaging through the years, and cleverly mimics a spaghetti package complete with ingredients and ConAgra Foods information. Bon appetite!

I don't know whether to have a laughing fit or run away scared. Either way it's an awesome, well crafted piece!

A character for whom I have no familiarity whatsoever but that doesn't stop me from appreciating a great piece of work and this surely qualifies. It really looks like a promo or give away that you got if you bought a certain sized pack or sent off box tops. Great stuff Kevin and as always a nice package too. Top marks guys!

It really does look like a Mail away bonus figure. Well done Kevin, again you are thinking outside the box.....uh! Can! and dwelling into uncharted waters. I am very immpressed with the Chef's likeness to the real Boyardee, I cannot figure out who the base head was, I'll guess Boss Hog only because you mentioned his suit. I'm figureing that you added the mustash and re-painted the whole head which looks great!. The hat is very accurate looking and the tiny can of ravioni is a brilliant touch. Box is fenominal and is really convincing of what this fig would have really came in. Excellent job all around. Will

How delightful.
Extremely well done custom, and it's probably more edible than the actual Boyardee product.

I'm glad everyone was amused by this (or suitably frightened). I should have elaborated a bit more on the box- some of the details are quite clever, for instance the "packaging through the years" instructs you to "follow the spaghetti strand" as you wind your way through the pictures. The head is a resin cast of Riker from the Rookies- not sure what company originally produced it but they must have been a Mego competitor in the 70's. I labored over the head paint to transform him into Boyardee- spent about 5-6 hours on just painting it. The mustache even has a litttle build-up on the head before I painted it so you can actually "feel it". Must say I was quite surprised that Martin and Andy never heard of Chef Boyardee. Just goes to show that not all of the crap we produce in this country is foisted on other nations of the world. You guys- Chef Boyardee pasta comes in cans and has been around since at least thje 1940's. It's real claim to fame though is that it is easy to just heat up and serve and is so incredibly bland and processed tasting that kids love it. Most kids have grown up with Boyardee and I dare say it's a favorite amongst bachelors as well.
